Music I Liked In 2011

Happy new year one and all. This is just a list of some records I have really enjoyed in the last year, in no particular order. Apologies to the ones I have overlooked. Spotify links where available. If you like something, go and buy it. The list excludes all the music we released at Gerry Loves Records this year, which I obviously think is all very good.

Music I’ve Liked In 2010

Just as I did last year, I submitted my top 5 albums of 2010 to Peenko’s BAMS list. You can view the collective results of that list, of which some of my top 5 were featured. However, I’m not that keen on ranking records in order, so here are those 5 plus a bunch more, in absolutely no order (and apologies to the host of great records I will only remember to include once this is posted).

  • The National - High Violet
  • Best Coast - Crazy For You
  • Meursault - All Creatures Will Make Merry
  • The Japanese War Effort - I Will Leave You Now, And Two Loudspeakers Will Take My Place
  • Pantha Du Prince - Black Noise
  • Gold Panda - Lucky Shiner
  • Yusuf Azak - Turn on the Long Wire
  • The Phantom Band - The Wants
  • Field Music – Measure
  • Mitchell Museum – The Peter’s Port Memorial Service
  • Bear in Heaven – Beast Rest Forth Mouth
  • Broken Records - Let Me Come Home
  • LCD Soundsystem – This Is Happening
  • Laura Marling - I Speak Because I Can
  • Errors - Come Down With Me
  • Timber Timbre - Timber Timbre
  • Broken Social Scene – Forgiveness Rock Record
  • The Scottish Enlightenment – St. Thomas
  • Port-royal - Dying in Time (Yes, it was released in 2009. I don’t care.)
  • The Unwinding Hours – The Unwinding Hours
  • Sufjan Stevens - Age Of Adz
  • Teenage Fanclub - Shadows
  • Arcade Fire – The Suburbs
  • Wooden Shjips – Vol. 2
  • Local Natives - Gorilla Manor
  • Foals - Total Life Forever

You should go and buy some of these. Go on.

The Nonimage 2007 Review

Late you say? Well yes, but I've been busy.

And I'm still too busy to do this properly, so I shall quickly list some stuff that rocked my world in 2007.

Events

SXSW was one of the best things I've done in a long time. i can't wait to do it all again in 2 months, this time with for Interactive and Music (and Film, although I'm not sure how much of that I'll see). Going to Ibiza off season was a great experience and just the relaxing time I needed. Continuing Black Tape has been great fun, especially having our first band, Broken Records. I started my own freelance business, which has been incredibly rewarding and fun so far, and pleasing successful for a new startup. I really am very lucky to be doing this.

Music

My 4 new obsessions from 2007 were Cut Off Your Hands, Ra Ra Riot, Broken Records and Black Kids (in order of discovery). I also was loving Kissaway Trail, Jens Lekman, Twilight Sad, Menomena, Seasick Steve, Beirut, Low, Malcolm Middleton, Justice, Simian Mobile Disco, Voxtrot, The Hold Steady, Radiohead, Modest Mouse, Gruff Rhys, Field Music, Battles, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, CSS, You Say Party! We Say Die!, Frightened Rabbit, Fujiya & Miyagi...and a huge amount more that I cant think of right now. Plus the usual stuff I have loved for years.

Live highlights were all of SXSW, all of Connect, finally seeing The Verve, Ra Ra Riot, Broken Records a few times, Foals, Kissaway Trail, Flaming Lips (as always), Twilight Sad, Jens Lekman, Menomena, Sonic Youth performing Daydream Nation, Al Green, Seasick Steve, Low, Bis, Battles, Dartz! and the NME New Rave Tour. Oh and Josh Ritter.

Films

I'm no film Buff, and I can't really remember what films I saw that I liked. Superbad was funny. If you are interested in visual culture at all, Helvetica is a documentary worth watching. And while I havent actually got round to sitting down with peace and quiet to watch it yet, the trailer for Heima, the Sigur Ros documentary looks incredible.

Other stuff

Coda is amazing and has changed the way I work. Ace Jet 170 is my favourite discovery, blog-wise. It gets me wanting to go out and find great old design stuff.

And that's all I have time for, which is a shame. So much more I want to say. Maybe I will soon.

Triptych.

The Triptych lineup has been announced and as usual it's pretty excellent. 5 days of quality bands that don't play here very often, if at all. Now the dilemma of who to see. I have a ticket for Low in Glasgow on the Thursday night (not part of Triptych), which is good, but also bad as I have seen them about 6 times already and there are 2 excellent looking gigs on the same night in Edinburgh. So, assuming that I can scrape together some cash to buy tickets before anything sells out, what should I go to? One per night, possibility of a second late one on either Friday Or Saturday. Hmmm.
